Chapter Seven

Dainéal’s eyes popped open when the mattress jiggled, just in time to see Artúr sprint from the bed and run for the bathroom. The door swung closed, but nothing could silence the sound of Artúr retching. Dainéal jumped up and hurried into the bathroom after his mate. Artúr was on his knees, giving up everything in his stomach to the porcelain god. He was as pale as a sheet, a fine sheen of sweat beading his brow.

Dainéal was admittedly a little sick to his stomach by the horrible sounds Artúr was making as he threw up, but he was more concerned that his mate had caught something. Maybe he had eaten something bad for him. Dainéal wasn’t that well versed in human anatomy beyond knowing he liked how his mate was built.

He quickly wet a rag and squatted down to wipe Artúr’s face. The weak smile the man sent him when he raised his head settled Dainéal’s fears until he spotted the three small blue dots high on Artúr’s left cheekbone.

If he hadn’t been so close to the floor, Dainéal knew he would have hurt himself when his legs gave out and he dropped down onto his butt with a resounding thud.

Artúr gave him a quizzical frown then quickly turned to throw up again, this time more of a dry heave as he didn’t seem to have much left in his stomach.

“I’m dying,” Artúr groaned as he took the rag Dainéal held out to him and wiped his mouth again.

“Um…not exactly.” Dainéal gulped. He had wondered if the ability to knot Artúr would give them even more of a bond, and now he knew. He was staring at undeniable proof in living blue color. He knew the dots didn’t appear until the seventh day of gestation, which meant Artúr had gotten with egg their very first time together.

It was amazing how much his life had changed in those seven days. A new life, a new mate, a new home, and now, it seemed a new hatchling to bring into the world.

Artúr raised a questioning brow, and Dainéal wondered how he was going to explain to his human mate that he was now carrying an egg. As the seconds ticked by, his anxiety level rose.

“What don’t I know, Dainéal?”

“You’re pregnant,” he simply said, realizing it was better to get to the heart of the issue, rather than tiptoeing around it.

“Pregnant?” Artúr asked as he started chuckling. It was obvious that he thought Dainéal was joking. He stopped suddenly when he realized that Dainéal wasn’t laughing, his eyes rounding until they dominated his pale face. “Wait…you’re serious? I’m pregnant?”

Artúr moved back from the toilet and looked at his stomach, and Dainéal followed his eyes downward. There was a small circle on his abdomen, around his belly button. The skin was discolored, but nothing overtly obvious, not yet anyway. It was the beginning of a pouch, and over the next three months, the pouch would grow and so would the egg within.
